Overall Core Architecture of Drilling Equipment
A complete oil drilling rig is a systematically integrated piece of equipment. Industry-standard rigs consist of eight core subsystems: the hoisting system, rotary system, circulating system, power system, transmission system, control system, well control system, and auxiliary system. All subsystems are mutually compatible and indispensable, working together to accomplish the full drilling workflow, including drilling, tripping in and out, cementing, and workover operations.
By operating scenario, rigs can be classified into land rigs and offshore platform rigs; by drive type, into mechanically driven rigs, electrically driven rigs, and variable-frequency intelligent rigs; by drilling depth, into shallow-well rigs, medium-deep-well rigs, deep-well rigs, and ultra-deep-well rigs — covering all operational requirements from shallow exploration at a few hundred meters to ultra-deep oil and gas drilling at depths of up to 10,000 meters.
Hoisting System
The hoisting system is the core load-bearing and lifting/lowering system of the drilling rig. It handles the lifting, lowering, and suspending of drill strings, casing, and downhole tools, and also regulates the weight on bit (WOB) during drilling. It serves as the "lifting core" of drilling operations and the fundamental safeguard of the entire rig's load capacity.
1.As the supporting framework of the entire rig, it is a truss-type steel structure vertically installed on top of the substructure. It is mainly used to suspend the traveling system, bear the full weight of the drill string, and provide elevated working space for tripping operations. By structure, it can be classified into tower-type (cantilever) , K-type; by erection method, into integral lift-up (whole erect) and section-assembled types. Deep and ultra-deep well operations mostly employ high-strength heavy-duty capable of carrying loads from several hundred tons to over a thousand tons, with excellent wind resistance, seismic resistance, and deformation resistance.
2. Crown Block: A fixed sheave assembly mounted at the highest point of the, serving as the fixed end of the traveling system. Its main function is to redirect the tension direction of the wire rope and work in conjunction with the traveling block to complete hoisting transmission. The number of sheaves directly determines the rig's hoisting multiple (block line factor) and load capacity.
3. Traveling Block and Hook: The traveling block is a movable sheave assembly that forms a pulley transmission mechanism with the crown block through the wire rope, moving up and down as the rope extends and retracts. The hook is suspended below the traveling block and is the core component that directly carries the drill string. It features cushioning and shock absorption, automatic unlatching, and suspension-locking functions, and can stably suspend drill strings and casing strings, adapting to tripping, making a connection, and cementing operations.
4. Drawworks (Main Hoist): The power output core of the hoisting system, consisting of the main drawworks and the auxiliary drawworks (cathead). The main drawworks drives the paying-out and reeling-in of the wire rope, controlling the lifting/lowering speed and load of the drill string; the auxiliary drawworks (cathead) is used for auxiliary pulling, lifting small tools, and adjusting drill string position. The drawworks is equipped with multiple braking structures — hydraulic brake, electromagnetic brake, and water brake — enabling smooth heavy-load start/stop and precise speed regulation, and preventing runaways and dropped drill string accidents.
5. Auxiliary Brake: The safety auxiliary braking device of the drawworks, including water brakes, eddy-current brakes, disc brakes, etc. It is mainly used to absorb inertial kinetic energy when lowering the drill string under heavy load, enabling uniform lowering, relieving the load on the main brake, and improving safety during heavy-load operations.
